What's Your Poison?
- The version on the album is the sixth one that has existed. It has been stripped down and shortened significantly since the first live demo.
- Versions of this song include two ‘Sell Out’ versions with completely different, poptastic choruses. These have and never will be heard by anyone outside the band.
- The song was originally conceived in our Mum and Dad’s garage in the Isle of Man in 2005. Lloyd helped write the instrumental track with Joe, two years before he actually joined the band. Rowan wrote lots of the original drum parts.
- Tom recorded the vocals on the original ‘live demo’ of the song through a set of headphones.
- The band have an ongoing argument about which animal would win a theoretical tournament to see who is hardest across every single world terrain. The verses of this song refer to shark vs human. It has since been concluded, in this tournament, a hippo or crocodile would probably win.
- Another one of our songs, Shut Your Mouth, was originally entitled ‘If A Shark Stops Swimming It Dies, Don’t Stop Swimming,” before any lyrics were written. This was a quote from the X-Files episode “E.B.E.” said by Deepthroat to Mulder. Shut Your Mouth was written at the same time as ‘What’s Your Poison?’ so we ended up stealing this as a lyric. We are so cool.
- All the shark facts in the song are completely true. The nurse shark (we think) is the only shark in the world that can stop still without dying.
- The lyric “They pushed a few rows forward” is in reference to the fact that sharks have many layers of teeth, so they can replace ones that go wrong easily. Obviously, we can’t.
- The second verse involving the line “I’d take them in the desert but I wouldn’t try at chess” refers to the fact that sharks have two brains. This is because they need to keep one operating while the other shuts down to rest. From this, Tom concluded that they must be clever and good at chess.
- The line “Take me to hospital ‘cos I’m sick” was inspired by a something said by Tom Hanks at the ending of the film ‘The Burbs’. This film also stars Corey Feldman, who is rad and inspired everything in life.
- The original title of the song was ‘I’m Gonna Kill Everyone. Satan Is Good, Satan Is Our Pal’ after a line in the same film.
- The shouts of “YO!” and “BUST IT!” were in tribute to MC Hammer, who we worshipped in our youth. To be honest, we still do today, (when we force ourselves to forget about the original video to “Pumps in a Bump”. Youtube it, if you dare. Although it’s an all ages affair, I recommend being over 18 and with a strong stomach)
