Creeping On The Ceiling
- The opening riff was written by Lloyd on his old Casio keyboard before he joined the band.
- Three different versions of this song exist.
- The solo near the end of the song was almost completely ripped off from a ditty in the game ‘Donkey Kong Country’ on the Super Nintendo.
- Tom recorded all the original demo (lead, solos and all) using a right handed guitar. Much to the derision of the rest of the band, he is left handed.
- The whole song was inspired by a line in Tom’s favourite poem, by Edward Gorey (aren’t we pretentious?) called “The Insect God”. Here, a young girl gets captured by giant insects in the night and driven away, before being sacrificed to the Insect God. The particular verse we used, goes like this:
“She was questioned in hopes of her answers revealing
What happened; she merely repeatedly said
‘I hear them walking about on the ceiling’.
She had gone irretrievably out of her head.”
- It was also inspired a little bit by “Lullaby”, the hit song by The Cure.
- We have been told by many people, including our Dad and MC Bat Commander from the Aquabats, to tone down the lyrics because they’re horrible. However, we tend not to care about The Man. The chorus is supposed to be what a scared child would imagine anything hiding in his room might be saying, but we removed a pre chorus that explained this. It went:
“I’m trying not to hear their call,
As my covers turn to lead,
I hear them taunting through the wall,
And this might be what they said...”
